A student asks an AI to explain photosynthesis. Another asks it to write their homework on photosynthesis. Everyone agrees the first is fine and the second is not.
The interesting cases are all in between, and that is where students actually live: asking for an essay "structure" and filling it in, asking it to check work and accepting every change, asking for a worked example that happens to be tonight's problem with different numbers.
Most schools' rules were written before any of this existed and do not resolve those cases. This post offers a test that does - and, more importantly, explains why the practical consequences matter more than the rule.
The Rule That Actually Works
Forget policy for a moment. Ask this:
Could you produce this again, alone, in an exam hall, next month?
If yes, the AI helped you learn. If no, it did the work, and you are carrying an inflated sense of your own preparation into an examination that will not be fooled.
That test is useful because it sidesteps the unanswerable question of how much help is too much and replaces it with a checkable one. It also happens to align with almost every school's actual intent, which is not "do not use tools" but "be able to do this yourself".
Two things follow from it.
The mark on the homework is not the point. Homework is practice for the exam. Practice someone else did for you is not practice, and a perfect assignment that taught you nothing is a worse outcome than a flawed one you produced.
The failure mode is practical before it is moral. A student who has an AI write their assignments for a term arrives at the terminal exam having genuinely rehearsed nothing, and finds out at the worst possible moment. That is the real cost, and it lands regardless of whether anyone catches them.
Why This Is Genuinely Hard to Judge
It is worth acknowledging that the confusion is reasonable rather than treating students as though the line were obvious.
The tool does not distinguish. The same interface that explains a concept will write your essay. There is no mode switch, no warning, and no friction between the acceptable use and the unacceptable one.
Help has always been allowed, in other forms. Asking a sibling to explain something is fine. Asking a tuition teacher to work an example is fine. A textbook's worked solutions are printed in the book. So "getting help" was never the boundary - and students correctly notice that.
The rules are behind the technology. Most academic integrity policies in Nepali schools predate general-purpose AI and say nothing specific. A student trying to follow the rules often cannot find out what they are.
The pressure is real. A student with six subjects, tuition, a commute and obligations at home, facing an assignment at eleven at night, is not weighing epistemology. They are trying to survive the week.
None of that makes the outcome different. But advice that ignores it is advice for an imaginary student.
The Clear Cases
Studying. Explaining a concept. Explaining it a different way. Giving a hint. Generating extra practice questions. Testing you. Checking your method after you have attempted something. Telling you what a marker would penalise. Translating a concept into Nepali so you can grasp it before learning the English terms.
Not studying. Producing the answer you submit. Writing the essay. Solving the problem set. Generating a paragraph you paste in. Rewriting your work in better English and submitting the rewrite as yours.
The distinction is not how much the AI did. It is whether the artefact you submitted came from your head.
The Blurry Middle, Case by Case
"Give me an outline and I will write it"
Usually fine, with a caveat. If the outline is genuinely structural - introduction, three points, conclusion - you are getting the shape and supplying the thinking, which is what a teacher does when they teach essay structure.
It stops being fine when the outline contains the argument. If the AI decided what your three points are, the analysis is not yours, and the analysis is what the marks are for.
Better version: write your own outline, then ask "what is missing from this and what is weak about it?"
"Rewrite this paragraph better"
This is the most common and most damaging borderline case, and the answer is: do not.
Not primarily because it is dishonest, but because it produces a better paragraph and zero improvement in you. You will submit prose you cannot reproduce, and next month you will be exactly as weak a writer as you were.
The version that works: "what is weak about this paragraph and why?" That produces a worse paragraph today and a better writer by the end of term. In an exam you write alone, and only the second version shows up there.
"Check my work"
Fine, and it depends what you do next. Accepting every correction without understanding it is copying with extra steps.
The discipline: for each correction, work out why it is a correction. If you cannot, ask - and if you still disagree, take it to your teacher, because you may well be right and that is one of the highest-value conversations available to you.
"Give me a worked example"
Fine in principle, easy to abuse. A worked example on a similar problem teaches the method. A worked example on tonight's exact problem with the numbers changed is the answer wearing a disguise.
Ask for the example first, on a different problem, then attempt yours.
"Explain the answer to this question"
Fine after you have attempted it. Not fine instead of attempting it.
The order matters enormously. Ten genuine minutes of your own effort makes the explanation land on a real question and tells you exactly where your understanding stopped. Going straight to the explanation removes the difficulty that would have produced the learning - and difficulty at the edge of what you can do is where learning happens, roughly what Vygotsky described as the zone of proximal development.
"Translate my Nepali essay into English"
Not for an English assignment. The assignment is testing your English composition, and a translated essay does not demonstrate it.
Fine for understanding. Reading an English concept in Nepali to grasp it, then learning the English terminology, is a perfectly good order to work in and it is faster than fighting the language and the concept at once.
How to Use It So You Actually Learn
Five habits. Together they make the tool close to strictly beneficial.
Attempt first, always. Ten minutes minimum before you ask anything. This single rule resolves most of the borderline cases by itself, because after a real attempt you have a specific question rather than a request for an answer.
Ask for hints, not answers. "Give me a hint, not the solution." Then another hint. The most useful sentence you can type into an AI tutor, and almost nobody types it.
Ask it to be Socratic. "Do not tell me the answer. Ask me questions until I get there myself." Most tutors do this well when asked, and it turns the tool into something closer to a teacher than a search engine - the Socratic method, available at eleven at night.
Ask it to test you. "Ask me ten questions on this, one at a time, and tell me if I am wrong." This is the single most under-used prompt available, and it converts the tool from an encyclopaedia into retrieval practice, which is where learning actually happens.
Close the loop. After any explanation, shut the chat and redo the problem from scratch. If you cannot, you watched rather than learned. Re-open and go again.
If you adopt one thing: attempt for ten minutes, then ask for a hint rather than an answer, then close the chat and redo it alone. Those three steps make almost every use of an AI tutor legitimate and productive at the same time.
Verify, Because It Can Be Confidently Wrong
A separate issue from honesty, and one that catches careful students.
Language models produce fluent, plausible text, and fluency is not accuracy. When a model states something false with complete confidence, that is a hallucination, and it is a property of how these systems work rather than a bug someone forgot to fix.
For a student the danger concentrates in exactly the places you are least able to catch it: unfamiliar topics, specific dates and figures, and anything where the Nepali syllabus differs from the international default.
The rule: understand from the tutor, confirm from the textbook. A concept explained well and then checked is worth having. A date memorised from a chat window is a risk you carry into the exam.
This is also why a general chatbot and a school-integrated tutor are different propositions. A general large language model knows nothing about your curriculum and will happily teach you a method your board does not use. It is not wrong, exactly - it is answering a different question than the one your paper will ask.
What to Do If You Have Already Been Doing It
Some readers will recognise themselves in the wrong half of this post. Three things, without the lecture.
Do not panic about the past assignments. They are done. The problem they created is a knowledge gap, and gaps are fixable.
Find out what you actually cannot do. Take a past paper, sit it timed and closed-book, and mark it strictly. That gives you the real picture rather than the one your homework marks suggest. It will be uncomfortable and it is much better to have that discomfort now than in the hall.
Change the order, not the tool. You do not have to stop using an AI tutor - you have to attempt first and ask for hints. The same tool, used in a different order, is the difference between the two outcomes in this whole post.
There is time. A term of over-reliance is recoverable; a terminal exam is not.
For Teachers and Parents Reading This
Detection is not the answer. AI-detection tools are unreliable in both directions, and accusing a student who wrote their own work is far more damaging than missing one who did not.
Assessment design does more than policy. Work produced under supervision, oral follow-up questions, and asking a student to explain their own submission all distinguish understanding from generation without anyone having to prove anything.
The consequence argues better than the prohibition. A student who understands that AI-written homework produces an unprepared exam candidate has a reason that survives the moment at eleven at night. "It is against the rules" does not.
The Short Version
The line is not how much help you had. It is whether what you submitted came from your head, and whether you could produce it again alone next month.
Attempt for ten minutes. Ask for hints, not answers. Ask it to test you rather than tell you. Close the chat and redo the thing. Verify anything factual against your textbook.
Do that and you get the most patient explainer you will ever have access to, with none of the cost. Skip it, and you get better homework marks and a worse exam - which is the trade nobody chooses deliberately and a great many make by accident.
