Most study timetables are made once, in a burst of optimism, usually on a Sunday. They allocate six hours a day, colour-code every subject, and are abandoned by Wednesday.

Then the student concludes they are bad at discipline, which is the wrong lesson. The timetable was badly built.

A timetable is not a statement of intent. It is a set of decisions made in advance so that a tired sixteen-year-old on a Thursday evening does not have to make them. Judged that way, most of them fail for reasons that are entirely fixable.


Why the Usual Timetable Fails

Four specific faults, in rough order of how often they are the culprit.

It is built on optimistic estimates. Everyone underestimates how long things take, consistently and by a large margin - the planning fallacy. A plan that assumes a chapter takes an hour when it reliably takes ninety minutes falls behind on day one, and by day three you are looking at a document that describes a person you are not.

It has no slack. A timetable with every hour allocated has no capacity for the evening a relative visits, the day you are ill, or the homework that takes twice as long. One disruption and the whole grid is wrong, at which point most students abandon it entirely rather than adjusting.

It allocates time, not outcomes. "6-7pm: Science" has no finish line. You can sit at the desk for the hour, read some pages, and have no way of knowing whether it worked. This also invites Parkinson's law - work expanding to fill the time available - so a vague task reliably consumes its whole slot regardless of size.

It is weighted by preference. Students give the most time to the subject they enjoy, which is usually the one they are already good at, and the weakest subject gets whatever is left over. Which is nothing.


Build It Backwards From the Exam

Start with the date, not with the week.

Step 1: count the weeks. Write the actual number. "Three months" is vague; "eleven weeks, of which two are taken by school exams" is a plan.

Step 2: list what must be covered per subject. Not chapters - topics, taken from the specification grid rather than the textbook contents page. The grid tells you how the marks are distributed, and it is the difference between covering the syllabus and covering the exam.

Step 3: divide, then remove a fifth. Split the topics across the available weeks, then delete the last 20% of your plan and keep it as reserve. You will need it. A plan you complete builds confidence; a plan you abandon costs you more than the content it contained.

Step 4: put revision in from the start. A common failure is a timetable that covers everything once, finishing the week before the exam, with no time to revisit anything. Anything learned in week two and never revisited is largely gone by week ten - that is the forgetting curve, not a personal failing. Build the return visits in.


The Weekly Shape

Once the overall map exists, the week is the unit you actually live in.

Weight by weakness and by credit. Your worst subject gets the most sessions. In a credit-weighted GPA a four-credit subject moves your average twice as much as a two-credit one, so an hour on a four-credit subject you are weak in is worth several hours perfecting something you already do well.

A workable split for six subjects, at around twelve to fourteen sessions a week:

  • Weakest subject: three sessions
  • Middle three subjects: two sessions each
  • Strongest two: one session each
  • One session for mixed past-paper work
  • One or two slots left deliberately empty

Review the split monthly, because the weak subject should stop being the weak subject. A timetable that never changes is not tracking reality.

Keep the same slots week to week where you can. Habits attach to cues. Studying at the same hour makes starting progressively easier, because the decision gets made once rather than every day.


The Session Is the Real Unit

A timetable is only as good as what happens inside a block. Four rules.

Every session gets a written finish line, not a duration. Not "Science", but "be able to explain refraction and answer five questions on it without notes". This is the single highest-value change available. A session with a finish line ends when the work is done; a session with only a duration ends when you get bored.

Ninety minutes maximum, with a real break. Attention degrades over a long unbroken stretch. Whether you use twenty-five-on-five-off in the Pomodoro style or forty-five-and-ten matters far less than taking the break deliberately rather than drifting into one.

Phone in another room. Not face-down on the desk. A visible phone costs attention even untouched, because part of your mind is allocated to not touching it - a straightforward cognitive load problem, and the change most students resist hardest.

Make it retrieval, not reading. A session spent re-reading notes produces recognition. A session spent answering questions from memory produces recall, which is what the exam asks for. If your timetable schedules "read chapter 7", it is scheduling the less effective activity.

Write next week's session goals on Sunday, one line each. Decisions made in advance survive tired evenings; decisions left to the moment lose to whatever else is happening in the room.


Making It Survive Real Life in Nepal

A timetable that assumes a quiet room, constant power and no obligations is a timetable for somebody else.

Plan around load-shedding rather than through it. Decide in advance what the offline session is - past papers on paper, working problems, question cards, writing practice. Then a power cut redirects the hour instead of ending it. Worth noticing that all of those are active retrieval, so the offline fallback is usually the more effective work.

Batch the connected tasks. Downloading material, asking an AI tutor, looking things up - group these into the windows when you reliably have power and signal, and leave paper work for the rest.

Fit around tuition honestly. If you attend tuition, book a self-study slot immediately after each class. An hour working problems on what was just explained converts a passive session into a learned one. Without it, you have watched someone else do maths, and tuition hours quietly substitute for preparation.

Account for household obligations. Many students have real responsibilities at home. Pretending otherwise produces a plan that fails and then a sense of personal failure attached to it. Put the obligations on the timetable as fixed blocks, then plan around them. Ten honest hours beat twenty imaginary ones.

Tell your family the slots. A stated, predictable study hour is far easier for a household to protect than a vague intention to study more.


A Worked Example

Eleven weeks to the SEE, six subjects, weakest in Maths and Science, roughly two and a half hours on a school day and four at the weekend.

Weeks 1-4: cover and diagnose. Two Maths sessions, two Science, one each for the rest, one mixed past-paper section at the weekend. Every session has a topic goal. Aim: know where the gaps are while there is time to fix them.

Weeks 5-8: fix and practise. Reallocate towards whatever the past papers exposed - often this means three Maths sessions and dropping a strong subject to fortnightly. Add a second past-paper section. Aim: the error list gets shorter and shifts from knowledge gaps towards timing.

Weeks 9-10: full papers. One timed paper per major subject per week, marked strictly and categorised. Revision comes only from what the papers exposed. No new material.

Week 11: consolidate. One-page sheets, the error log, sleep. Nothing new.

Two empty slots every week throughout. If nothing goes wrong, use them for extra past papers. Something will go wrong.


Tracking Whether It Is Working

A plan you do not check is a wish.

Tick the sessions you completed, not the hours you sat. At the end of the week, count them. If you completed under two-thirds, the plan is too heavy, not you. Cut it and try again - a smaller plan you finish is worth more than a larger one you abandon, for confidence as much as for content.

Every fortnight, sit one timed past-paper section cold. Track the score and the proportion of lost marks that were careless rather than unknown. The first tells you whether you are learning. The second tells you whether your remaining problem is knowledge or execution, and those need opposite responses.

Adjust monthly, not daily. Daily adjustment is just abandonment with extra steps. Monthly is often enough to respond to real change.


The Timetable for Exam Week Itself

The plan that got you here is the wrong plan for the week the papers actually run. Two things change: the sessions get shorter, and the subject order stops being yours to choose.

Work backwards from the paper order. Once the datesheet is out, the day before each paper belongs to that subject and nothing else. Everything else fits around that fixed frame.

Two hours the evening before a paper, not five. You are more tired than you feel, and the next paper needs you functional more than it needs two extra hours. Review one-page sheets and the error log only.

Leave the morning of a paper empty. Revising in the queue outside the hall finds gaps you can no longer close and does nothing but frighten you.

Do not plan the whole week in detail. A paper going badly changes what the following evening should contain. Plan two days ahead and re-decide each evening.


If You Are Starting Late

Some readers are reading this four weeks out, not eleven. The honest plan is different, and pretending otherwise wastes the four weeks.

Triage explicitly, and write the losses down. Go through the specification grid and sort every topic into three piles: heavily weighted and nearly learned, heavily weighted and unknown, lightly weighted and unknown. Work the first pile, then the second, and formally abandon the third. A loss you have decided to accept stops consuming worry; an unacknowledged one keeps generating it.

Past papers become the plan, not a check on it. With four weeks, the fastest route to marks is working real questions and fixing what they expose, because that is the only method that spends every hour on something examinable.

Two subjects a day, maximum. Spreading four weeks across six subjects daily produces twenty-minute fragments that achieve nothing. Depth per session matters more when the total is small.

Do not try to fix your worst subject from zero. With eleven weeks, that is the highest-return move. With four, the return is better on the subject sitting just under a grade boundary, because a band is often five to eight careless marks rather than a topic.


What Not To Do

Do not build a beautiful timetable. Colour-coding and neat grids are procrastination that looks like planning. A list of session goals on notebook paper works identically.

Do not schedule twelve-hour days. They do not happen, and the plan's failure on day two poisons the rest of it. Four to six focused hours on a school-free day is a real number.

Do not schedule the same subject in consecutive blocks when the topics are similar. Similar material learned back to back interferes with itself - interference theory - which is how you end up producing the right fact about the wrong thing in an exam.

Do not cut sleep to make the timetable fit. Memory is consolidated overnight. Hours taken from sleep are subtracted from the value of every hour that preceded them.

Do not eliminate everything that is not studying. Students who cut football, family and rest do not gain those hours; they lose them to reduced concentration and arrive at the exam depleted. Schedule one thing that is not studying, and protect it as seriously as a study block.
