Almost every student in Nepal knows past papers are useful. Almost none use them properly.

The common version goes like this: open a paper, read a question, try to remember whether you know it, look at the answer, think "yes, I could have done that", move to the next question. Forty minutes, twenty questions, a comfortable feeling of preparation, and close to zero learning.

The proper version takes three hours for one paper and is worth ten of those.

This post is about the difference, and about the thing past papers give you that no textbook, teacher or AI tutor can: a precise, honest list of your own mistakes.


Why Past Papers Beat Everything Else

Three reasons, and the third is the one people miss.

The exam is predictable. The SEE and NEB papers are built from a specification grid - a document that says how many marks come from which unit and in what form. That grid does not change much year to year, which means the shape of the paper does not either. Five years of past papers is a fairly complete picture of what will be asked and how.

They test retrieval, which is what the exam tests. Reading notes trains recognition. A past paper forces you to produce an answer from an empty page under time pressure, which is the actual skill being examined. This is active recall applied to a whole paper, and the testing effect it produces is one of the most reliable findings in learning research.

They tell you what you are wrong about. This is the real value and it is almost always wasted. You cannot revise a gap you have not located, and self-assessment is famously unreliable - students consistently feel most confident about the topics they have read most, not the topics they can produce. A marked past paper replaces that feeling with evidence.


Where to Get Them

Your school. Almost every school keeps a set, and asking your subject teacher is faster than any search. Many will also have the marking schemes, which are worth more than the papers.

The curriculum body. The Curriculum Development Centre publishes the curriculum and the specification grids the papers are constructed from. Reading the grid for your subject takes twenty minutes and tells you exactly how the marks are distributed across units - which is information most students never see.

The examinations board. The National Examinations Board is the authority for the examination itself, including schedules and official notices.

Model questions and practice sets circulate widely in print and online. These are useful supplements and are not equivalent to a real past paper: the phrasing, the mark distribution and the difficulty calibration of an actual examination are hard to reproduce. Use real papers first and practice sets to fill gaps.

Check the year and the curriculum against your own. A paper from before a syllabus revision may test units you will not be examined on and omit units you will. An old paper is still useful for technique, but do not use it to decide what to revise.


The Four-Step Loop

This is the whole method. It is not complicated and it is not comfortable.

1. Sit it properly

Timed, in one sitting, closed book, no phone, at a desk. Write in full as you would in the hall.

This part is non-negotiable and it is the part most often skipped. The pressure is not incidental to the exercise - it is a large part of what you are practising. A paper done in pieces across an afternoon with the textbook nearby tests something you will never be asked to do.

If a full paper is too much, do one section under strict conditions rather than a whole paper under loose ones.

2. Mark it strictly, against the scheme

Use the official marking scheme where you have it. Where you do not, mark as pessimistically as you can bear.

The discipline here is refusing to give yourself marks a marker would not. "I knew that, I just wrote it badly" is zero marks in the hall, and recording it as a mark you earned destroys the entire diagnostic value of the exercise. The paper is not a performance to be pleased with. It is an instrument, and an instrument you lie to is useless.

3. Categorise every lost mark

This is the step that makes the difference, and the one nobody does.

For each mark you dropped, write down which of these it was:

  • Knowledge gap. You did not know it. Revision needed.
  • Application failure. You knew the content but could not use it on this question. More practice on that question type needed.
  • Careless error. Arithmetic slip, missing unit, misread question, half-finished answer. Care and time, not revision.
  • Timing. You never reached the question. Pacing practice, not content.

Then total each category.

The totals are the point. A student who lost twenty marks - fourteen careless, four timing, two knowledge - has a completely different problem from a student who lost twenty all from knowledge gaps, and the two need opposite responses. The first should slow down and practise under the clock; the second should go back to the textbook. Both, told simply to "revise more", will do the wrong thing.

4. Fix the largest category, then sit another

Do not attempt to fix everything. Take the biggest number, work on that specifically for a few days, and sit the next paper.

By the third or fourth paper, the pattern in your own mistakes becomes obvious - and it is nearly always narrower than you expected. Most students discover they lose marks in two or three recurring ways, not twenty. That short list is the single most valuable thing past papers give you.


Reading the Specification Grid

Twenty minutes that almost no student spends, and it reshapes revision more than any study technique.

The grid tells you, for each subject, how many marks come from each unit and at which cognitive level - recall, understanding, application. Two things fall out of it immediately.

Weight your revision by marks, not by chapter count. A unit worth twenty marks and a unit worth six are not equally worth your evening, and textbook chapter length is a poor guide to either. Students routinely spend equal time per chapter and are surprised when a heavily-weighted unit lets them down.

Notice the cognitive level. A unit examined mostly at recall level rewards flashcards and self-testing. A unit examined at application level rewards working problems. These are different activities and the grid tells you which one a unit needs.

Combine this with your past-paper mistake list and you have a revision plan built from evidence rather than from guesswork - which is the whole aim.


Marking Schemes Are the Real Prize

If you can get marking schemes, they are worth more than the papers.

They show you what a marker is looking for, which is frequently narrower and more mechanical than students assume. A four-mark question often has four identifiable things the marker is ticking. Knowing that changes how you write an answer: you make the four points clearly and separately rather than producing a flowing paragraph in which they are buried.

They show where partial marks live. In most subjects an incomplete answer earns something. Seeing the scheme tells you exactly which parts of a method carry marks - which is why writing the formula down is worth doing even when you cannot finish the calculation.

They reveal the standard phrases. Science and Social Studies schemes frequently expect particular terminology. "It gets hot" and "the temperature increases" are not always worth the same, and the scheme is where you find that out.

Read one scheme properly for each of your subjects. It is a couple of hours and it changes how you write for the rest of the year.


Timing: Practise It Deliberately

Marks lost to time are the most infuriating kind, because they were marks you could have had.

Work out the marks-per-minute for each paper and write it at the top of your practice sheet. If a paper is 75 marks in 150 minutes, that is two minutes per mark. A five-mark question deserves ten minutes and not twenty-five, however interesting it is.

Practise abandoning a question. This is a genuine skill and it feels wrong every time. When you are over budget on a question, leave a gap and move on. Returning with ten minutes at the end is far better than sacrificing three later questions to finish this one.

Do a reading pass first. Two minutes at the start reading the whole paper and marking the questions you can definitely do. It removes the moment of blankness where panic starts, and it means you begin with something you can finish.


Common Ways Students Waste Past Papers

Doing them too early. A paper attempted before you have covered the content produces a low score, no useful diagnosis and a dent in your confidence. Cover the material first, then use papers to find the gaps. The exception is the final month, when papers are the whole plan regardless.

Doing them open-book. This turns a diagnostic into a comprehension exercise. You will find every answer and learn nothing about what you can retrieve.

Marking generously. Discussed above and worth repeating, because it is the most common failure. A flattering score is worse than no score.

Only doing the papers, never the analysis. Twelve papers sat and never analysed is twelve wasted afternoons. One paper sat, marked strictly and categorised is worth more than all twelve.

Memorising specific answers. Students who notice a question recurring sometimes memorise its answer. The question will come back rephrased, with different numbers, and a memorised answer will not survive it. Learn the method the question tests.

Doing only the subjects you like. Your past-paper time should be weighted towards your weakest subject, which is precisely the one where sitting a timed paper is least pleasant.


A Realistic Schedule

Three months out. One paper per subject, spread across the month. The goal is diagnosis: find out what you do not know while there is still time to fix it.

Two months out. Two papers per subject. The mistake categories should be shifting from knowledge gaps towards application and timing. If they are not, the revision between papers is not working.

One month out. One paper per week per major subject, all timed, all marked, all categorised. By now your mistake list should be short and specific.

Final two weeks. Papers plus targeted revision of nothing but what the papers exposed. No new material.

Track two numbers across all of it: your score, and the proportion of lost marks that were careless rather than unknown. The first tells you whether you are learning. The second tells you whether your remaining problem is knowledge or execution - and near the exam, it is almost always execution.


What a Paper Looks Like Per Subject

The loop is the same everywhere. What you are looking for differs.

Mathematics. The most diagnostic subject of all, because a wrong answer has a locatable cause. Do not just mark right or wrong - find the line where it went wrong. Almost every Maths error is one of four things: the wrong method chosen, the right method misapplied, an arithmetic slip, or a question misread. Those four have completely different fixes and students who never separate them keep re-reading theory when their real problem is care.

Also count how many marks you lost for steps you skipped. In a paper marked by method, skipping working costs marks even when the answer is right, and it is the single most common self-inflicted loss in the subject.

Science. Watch for three specific things. Whether your diagrams were labelled fully - part-labelled diagrams lose marks that were free. Whether you used the technical term rather than the everyday one. And whether you gave the number of points the question asked for: "state two reasons" awards two marks and one reason earns one, however good it is.

English and Nepali. Marking your own writing is hard, so ask a different question than "is this good". Ask: does it have the structure the question asked for? A formal letter has required parts and each is worth marks. A summary has a word limit and exceeding it costs. A comprehension answer must come from the passage. These are checkable, and they are where the marks actually go.

For composition, the useful exercise is rewriting one answer after seeing the scheme - not writing a new one. You learn more from improving a marked draft than from producing a second unmarked one.

Social Studies. This is the subject where past papers reveal the largest gap between feeling prepared and being prepared, because recall of dates and definitions collapses faster than students expect. Mark ruthlessly on precision: an approximately-right date is wrong. Build your flashcard set from what the paper exposed, not from the chapter you happen to be reading.


Sitting a Paper When You Cannot Print It

A practical note, since not every student has easy access to a printer.

Read from the screen, write on paper. This is fine and in some ways better - it forces you to look away from the question while you compose the answer, which is closer to exam conditions than having the paper in front of you.

Download before you sit it. A paper you are reading from a browser that loses connection mid-attempt is a wasted afternoon. Pull the PDF down first.

Keep your answer sheets. Numbered and dated, in one folder. In the final month, re-reading your own marked scripts from two months earlier is more useful than any revision guide, because it shows you which mistakes you have actually stopped making and which you have not.

One notebook for the mistake list. Every categorised error from every paper, in one place. By the fourth paper it becomes the most valuable document you own, and it is the thing to revise from in the last week rather than a textbook.


Using an AI Tutor Alongside

Past papers generate exactly the kind of specific question an AI tutor is good for, provided you use it in the right order.

After marking, not during. Sit the paper, mark it, then take your wrong answers to the tutor. Paste the question and your own working and ask where it went wrong and whether the error was conceptual or careless - that is the categorisation step, done faster.

Ask for more of the question type you failed. "Give me five more questions like this one" turns a single identified weakness into targeted practice, which is what fixing it requires.

Ask it to mark like a marker. For written subjects, give it your answer and the question and ask what a marking scheme would award and what it would not. Useful, and worth checking against a real scheme where you have one.

Do not ask it to do the paper. Obvious, and worth stating, because the temptation arrives around question fourteen on a Sunday evening.


The Short Version

Past papers are the most useful free resource available to you, and their value is almost entirely in the marking rather than the sitting.

Sit it timed and closed-book. Mark it as a stranger would. Sort every lost mark into knowledge, application, carelessness or timing. Fix the biggest pile. Sit another.

Do that four times and you will know more about what is standing between you and a better grade than any amount of revision could have told you.
