How to Take Notes That Are Actually Worth Re-Reading

Most students in Nepal take notes the same way: the teacher speaks or writes, you write down what they said, and at some point in the future you read it back.

The result is a notebook that took forty hours to produce and gets opened twice.

The problem is not effort. It is that transcription and learning are different activities that feel identical while you are doing them. Copying is comfortable, it looks like work, it fills a page, and it produces almost nothing you can retrieve under exam pressure.

This post is about what to do instead.


What Notes Are Actually For

Two purposes, and they pull in opposite directions.

Capture - getting information out of a lesson before you forget it. This favours writing a lot, quickly.

Retrieval - having something you can use to test yourself later. This favours writing very little, selectively.

Almost all student note-taking optimises entirely for the first and ignores the second, which is why the notebook is thick and useless. The fix is to accept that these are two jobs and do them separately: capture roughly in the lesson, then convert into something retrievable afterwards.

That conversion step is where the learning happens, and it is the step nobody does.


Why Copying Does Not Work

When you transcribe, your hand is busy and your understanding is idle. You can copy a definition of osmosis perfectly without processing it at all - which is why students recognise every line in their notebook and cannot produce any of it.

Two effects in the note-taking research explain the alternative.

The generation effect: you remember information you produced better than information you read. Writing "why does water move into the cell?" and answering it yourself beats copying the answer, every time.

Elaborative encoding: you remember things you connected to something you already know. A note that says "osmosis - like how salt draws water out of cut vegetables" is far stickier than the textbook sentence, because it is hooked onto something already in your head.

Both require you to do something with the material rather than move it from board to page. That is the whole difference.


In the Lesson: Capture, Do Not Transcribe

The classroom is a bad place for careful notes. It moves at the teacher's pace and you have no time to think. So aim low and deliberately.

Write what is not in the book. Definitions, formulas and diagrams are already printed in your textbook, and copying them is duplicating work. What is not in the book: the teacher's explanation of why something happens, the worked example they invented, the aside about what usually comes up in the exam, and the mistake half the class made on last night's homework. That material exists nowhere else and it disappears at the bell.

Mark your confusion, do not hide it. When you lose the thread, write a question mark and one line saying where. ? lost at step 3 of the refraction example. This takes four seconds and it is the most valuable thing on the page, because it is a specific question you can resolve the same evening. Students who try to keep following instead convert one lost step into a lost lesson.

Leave space. A wide margin or a blank right-hand third. You will need it for the conversion step, and a page with no room forces you to start a new document later, which is a friction that reliably means it never happens.

Abbreviate without shame. Nobody is marking your notebook. Arrows, symbols, short forms, Nepali where Nepali is faster - whatever gets it down.


After the Lesson: The Conversion

Ten minutes, the same day. This is the part that turns notes into learning, and it is the part that gets skipped.

Take your rough capture and produce three things in the margin or on a facing page:

Questions. Turn each piece of content into a question you could be asked. Not "osmosis is the movement of water..." but "What drives water across a semi-permeable membrane, and which way does it go?" You now have a self-test instead of a paragraph.

One-line summaries. For each section, one sentence in your own words. If you cannot write it, you did not understand it - and you have just found that out on Tuesday rather than in the exam.

Links. What does this connect to? Which earlier topic does it assume? Where might it appear in a question with something else? These connections are the elaborative encoding that makes the material stick.

The conversion is the whole method. If you do nothing else from this post, do this: ten minutes the same evening, turning the day's notes into questions. It costs less time than re-reading and produces several times the recall.


Three Formats Worth Knowing

You do not need a system. But three are genuinely useful and each suits a different kind of subject.

Cornell notes - for lecture-heavy subjects

Cornell notes divide the page: a narrow left column, a wide right column, and a strip across the bottom.

  • Right column: your rough capture during the lesson.
  • Left column: the questions, written afterwards. This is the conversion step, structurally enforced.
  • Bottom strip: a two-line summary of the whole page.

The reason it works is not the layout - it is that revising means covering the right column and answering the left. The format makes self-testing the default rather than something you have to remember to do.

Best for Social Studies, Science theory, and anything where a teacher talks.

Mind maps - for connected topics

A mind map puts the topic in the centre and branches outward.

Genuinely useful when the structure of the subject is the content: the human body systems and how they interact, the causes and consequences of a historical event, a chapter's worth of interlinked definitions. It is much weaker for sequential material like a mathematical derivation.

Draw it from memory as a revision exercise, then check against the book. Drawing it from the book while looking at the book is transcription in a nicer shape.

The one-page sheet - for every subject, before exams

The single most useful revision artefact, and the one to build deliberately.

One page per topic. Every formula, key term, standard diagram and common question type. One page. The constraint is the point: if it does not fit, you are copying rather than selecting, and selecting is the thinking.

Build these as you go, not in the last week. In the final fortnight they are what you revise from, and forty pages of transcribed notes are what you wish you had turned into them.


Subject by Subject

Mathematics. Notes are barely the point - working problems is. But keep two things: a one-page formula sheet per chapter, and an error log. The error log is a running list of mistakes you have made with the reason next to each one. By exam time it is the most valuable page you own, because it is a list of your own habits rather than of the syllabus.

Science. Notes by topic, not by chapter. When you study electricity, put every term, formula, diagram and common question on one sheet regardless of which chapters they came from. Draw the standard diagrams yourself rather than copying them - the labelling is what is examined and drawing it is what fixes it.

Social Studies. The most memory-intensive subject and the one where question-format notes pay most. Every definition, date and figure becomes a card or a line in a question list. Reviewing on a rotation beats reviewing in one block, because a little forgetting between reviews is what makes recall durable.

English and Nepali. Do not take notes on literature by summarising the plot. Note the author, the theme, and two or three quotable lines. For grammar, do not note the rule - note an example of the rule applied and a question testing it. For writing, keep a list of the corrections you keep receiving; that list is worth more than any set of notes on essay structure.


Handwriting Versus Typing

A live debate with a lot of confident claims on both sides. The honest position for a student in Nepal is more practical than theoretical.

Handwriting is slower, which is usually an advantage. Because you cannot keep up, you are forced to select and compress - which is thinking. Typing fast enough to transcribe verbatim removes that pressure and often produces a perfect, useless record.

The exam is handwritten. Writing long answers by hand at speed is itself a skill, and students who type everything arrive at a three-hour paper with an unpractised hand. That is a real and underrated cost.

Digital wins for search, backup and diagrams you want to reuse. A phone photo of a board is a legitimate capture tool - it is a terrible substitute for notes, but a good way to not lose a diagram.

A reasonable split: handwrite in class and for practice; keep digital copies of anything you would be upset to lose.


What to Do With Notes You Have Already Made

If you are reading this with three notebooks of transcription already written, do not throw them out and do not re-copy them.

Convert one topic at a time, starting with your weakest subject. Take a chapter's notes and produce the one-page sheet and the question list from them. Two hours per subject, and it turns dead material into usable material without rewriting anything.

Do not convert what the exam does not weight heavily. Check the specification grid, spend the effort where the marks are.


Notes as a Spaced-Repetition System

The reason question-format notes are worth the conversion effort is that they turn a notebook into something you can review on a schedule rather than in a panic.

Review on a rotation, not in a block. A topic reviewed on day 1, day 3, day 10 and day 30 is retained far better than the same total time spent on it in one sitting. This is distributed practice, and it works because forgetting a little and then retrieving it is what makes the memory durable - the mechanism behind the forgetting curve.

A cheap version that needs no app. Keep your question sheets in one folder. Write the date at the top each time you answer a sheet cold. Every few days, pick the sheet with the oldest date. That is spaced repetition with a pen, and it takes no setup.

Do not re-review what you got right twice. Move those sheets to the back. Attention is finite and your weakest topics should be seeing it.

There is a second reason to space the reviews, less discussed. Similar material learned close together interferes with itself - interference theory - which is why studying two similar topics back to back on the same evening reliably produces confusion between them. Separating them by a day or two costs nothing and prevents a specific, common kind of exam mistake: producing the right fact about the wrong thing.


Note-Taking When You Cannot Rely on Power or Internet

Practical, since a fair number of students are working around load-shedding.

Paper is the reliable medium and it is also the better one for retrieval. This is a case where the constraint pushes you towards the more effective habit rather than away from it - writing questions by hand and answering them by hand needs nothing but a notebook.

Photograph the board before the power matters. A phone photo of a diagram costs nothing and survives everything. Treat it as capture, not as notes - it still has to be converted.

Do the conversion in the offline window. Turning the day's capture into questions requires no connection and no electricity beyond daylight or a lamp. It is the ideal thing to do when the power is out and you would otherwise stop working.

Keep one physical folder for the question sheets. Anything that lives only on a device you cannot always charge is a resource you cannot always revise from, and the last fortnight before an exam is exactly when you need it available every day.


Common Mistakes

Colour-coding and rewriting neatly. This feels productive and is almost pure transcription. A beautiful notebook and a thin one are equally useless if neither contains questions.

Highlighting. Marking a sentence as important is not the same as knowing it, and re-reading highlighted text is the least effective form of revision that exists. If you must highlight, follow it immediately by writing the question that sentence answers.

Copying the whole textbook. The textbook already exists. Your notes should contain what the textbook does not: your teacher's explanations, your questions, your errors, your connections.

Never re-opening them. Notes you do not revisit were a waste of the lesson. If your notes are not something you can test yourself with, that is the reason - fix the format rather than the discipline.


The Short Version

Notes have two jobs and most students do only one. Capture roughly in the lesson - the things that are not in the book, and exactly where you got lost. Then spend ten minutes the same day converting that into questions, one-line summaries and links.

Build one page per topic as you go. Keep an error log in Maths. Test yourself from the questions rather than re-reading the content.

The measure of a good notebook is not how complete it is. It is whether you can hand it to someone and have them examine you from it.
